This piping was manufactured approximately 25 years ago. It was introduced as the first plastic piping to replace copper piping. Commonly used throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s it was installed in 20,000 – 40,000 homes. In the late 80’s the product hit the headlines as it began to fail in homes across New Zealand and the manufacturer, Dux industries, withdrew the product from the market approximately 24 years ago.
Most of the leaks on this piping occur with the acetyl elbows and tees cracking in the throat of the junctions of the piping. There is a small amount of leaks from the piping itself as it splits longitudinally if under tension.
As a large percentage of the houses of that era were piped with the main pipe runs in the ceiling area, during summer the roof space becomes very hot and this in turn heats the pipes up and causes them to expand and therefore start to break down and cause leaks.
